Draft pending legal review. This document is a plain-language working draft written to describe how Altru intends to operate. It has not been reviewed by an attorney and is not a substitute for professional legal advice. Sections needing formal review are marked [needs legal review].
Altru is built for high school and college students, which means many of our users are minors. Protecting their information is central to how the product works — not an afterthought. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
01 Who this applies to
This policy applies to students, parents/guardians, school staff, and organizations who use Altru. Some students are under 18; where that changes our obligations, we say so explicitly. [needs legal review]
02 Information we collect
To create and operate an account, we may collect:
- Name, email, and password
- Phone number and date of birth (to confirm eligibility for age-restricted opportunities)
- School, grade/year, and general location (city, state, ZIP)
- Volunteer interests and your signup, attendance, and verified-hours history
We collect the minimum needed to run the core loop: discover, sign up, volunteer, verify, and track hours.
03 How we use information
We use your information to match you with relevant opportunities, let organizations manage and verify your participation, generate your service records and transcript, and send the notifications you choose to receive. We do not sell personal information.
04 What is never public
Student profiles are private by default. Date of birth, phone, email, and exact address are never shown publicly, regardless of your visibility setting. Making a profile “public” is an explicit opt-in and still excludes sensitive fields.
05 Minors and parental rights
We aim to comply with laws protecting minors, including provisions relevant to users under 13 and 16. Parents/guardians may request access to, correction of, or deletion of a minor's data. The precise mechanisms and legal bases here require formal review before launch. [needs legal review]
06 Sharing with organizations & schools
When you claim a spot, the hosting organization sees the details needed to run the shift and verify your hours. If you link a school, authorized school staff can see your verified service against a requirement. They cannot see unrelated activity.
07 Data retention & security
We keep your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide your service record, then delete or anonymize it. We use industry-standard safeguards, but no system is perfectly secure. Specific retention windows require review. [needs legal review]
08 Your choices
You can edit your profile, change notification and visibility settings, export your hours, and request account deletion at any time from Settings.
